Grow Your Own “Magic” Beanstalk

Earth Day is April 22nd, this is a great project to help teach your little ones about plants and their important role in our eco-system.

What you will need:

  • Some sort of dried bean, we used large lima beans
  • A container with a tight fitting lid
  • Paper towels

How to:

  • Dampen your paper towels with water, they should be thoroughly wet, but not dripping wet.
  • Place paper towels in bottom of container
  • Place seeds on top of paper towels
  • Close with a tight fitting lid and place in an area that gets some direct sunlight.

Your beans should split upon almost over night, and with in a few days will have sprouts. My oldest son loved this, every morning he would check it and say “Look Mama, our beanstalk is growing bigger!”, he truly believed it was a “magic” beanstalk.

If your children are older you can implement a lesson plan about the anatomy of a seed. Here is a great link to help you do that.

  3. I remember doing this as a kid.

    It was magical.

I'll definitely pass the lesson on when my son gets a bit older.

  4. I remember doing that as a kid, too. We've actually watched this process in our garden, and my oldest is soooo excited to go check to see if anything new has sprouted or how things are growing. They get soooo excited...it's so sweet.
