What Causes Insomnia?

Mental Health Monday

Insomnia is a symptom of many different sleep disorders, it is the difficulty to fall asleep or stay asleep, but what causes it?

  • Stress/Anxiety
  • Depression (can cause excessive sleep as well)
  • Medications- antidepressants, heart and blood pressure medications, allergy medications, stimulants (such as Ritalin) and corticosteroids. Many over-the-counter (OTC) medications, including some pain medication combinations, decongestants and weight-loss products, contain caffeine and other stimulants.
  • Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol- Alcohol is a sedative that may help you fall asleep, but it prevents deeper stages of sleep and often causes you to awaken in the middle of the night.
  • Medical conditions- arthritis, cancer, congestive heart failure, diabetes, lung disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), overactive thyroid, stroke, Parkinson disease and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Change in your schedule
  • Learned insomnia-  This may occur when you worry excessively about not being able to sleep well and try too hard to fall asleep. Most people with this condition sleep better when they're away from their usual sleep environment or when they don't try to sleep, such as when they're watching TV or reading.
  • Hormone shifts- like the ones right before menstruation and during menopause
  • Mental disorders- like bipolar disorder
  • Parasites…lol, don’t let the bed bugs bite!

58% of  Americans report having insomnia a few nights every week or more. Insomnia gets worse as people age since you generally need less sleep the older you are.

While I don’t think I suffer from insomnia, it  does take me longer than most people to fall asleep, usually around 30-60 minutes, and I sleep very lightly when I do fall asleep. I take a medication to help me fall asleep and stay asleep, its been a godsend.

Are any of you insomniacs?

  1. sometimes I don't sleep at all and for days and at other times I sleep to much. At times I 'm not sure what it is related to but your list seems to be accurate on my part at least.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. The sinus meds sometimes keep me awake, but usually, I'm so exhausted, I just fall right asleep. Now, getting the boys to let me STAY asleep is another story, LOL!

  6. I am most definitely an insomniac. I have tried over the counter remedies for it, and they worked, but with the pain medication I'm on, I can't take them. So, I toss and turn. It is a sucky mental health issue to be sure.

  7. I found out that my little night time chuck of chocolate was to blame for a lot of my tossin and turnin! I stay up late reading til I can't focus anymore - doesn't matter what time I go to bed, I'm awake a 5 am. I have found a bit of help on occasion from Calms Forte - an herbal thing.

  8. I take forever to fall asleep, too. What's funny is that I usually can't keep my eyes open until I get in the bed. Then all of a sudden my brain wakes up, and I toss and turn. Benadryl doesn't even help anymore. I went to buy an OTC sleeping aid a few weeks ago, and, as it turns out, they're all made from Benadryl. They just charge a lot more and tend to dye the pills white or blue instead of pink. I ended up buying melatonin. I don't know if it's helping or not.

I know one thing that keeps me up is Claritin D. I take the 12 hour because the 24 hour version knocks me out, but if I take the 12 hour too close to bed, I'm wide awake. So basically I have a choice, sleep but not breathe, or breath but not sleep.

  9. BTW, I'll have to stop by later to drop on EC. Right now I'm getting a connection interrupted message on everyone's EC widgets. Don't know what that's about. I'm even getting it on mine.

  10. I don't have a huge problem with it, but anxiety (surprise, surprise) often keeps me awake longer than it should at night...

  11. Mine comes and goes as to how bad it is - I think I prefer the excessive sleep instead!
