I Am Done Tip-Toeing

When I first started this blog, I purposely strayed away from certain topics i.e. religion, and politics, because I did not want to offend any of my readers. Well, I am tired of being a people pleaser…life is too short.

After Ezra was diagnosed with Leukemia I looked at my blog differently, I knew I needed to make it more of a space for me, after all it is my creative outlet. So I started writing more about my feelings, putting myself more out there, and I plan to continue to do so. I plan to write a lot more about Ezra and my stories about my mental illness.

That being said, I have read and heard things this week that have just down right appalled me. I was so mad at the fuss that was being made over our President addressing our students.

When George Bush (senior) addressed the students, were there permission slips sent out? No, there were not. No one even thought twice about it.

I thought it was a slap in Obama’s face, the way people were treating it. This man has worked so hard, and overcome so many obstacles…and that is how we treat him? Is it because he is a Democrat, because he is black, or because he runs things differently than the last 8 years have been run?

Did people really think Obama was going to start spewing political propaganda to their children? Why would anyone think he was going to do that, how would that benefit anyone? Your children don’t care and most don’t even understand what health care reform is!

The people elected this man, we need to show him more respect, and appreciation. By telling your child they can’t listen to the President’s speech, you are basically saying, only respect and appreciate the President if he is of my political party. Which is just wrong, we should teach our children to respect the President regardless of his political stance, he is the President! Did you hear the speech? It was amazing, and motivational, and every child should have heard it. What a shame.

Secondly, how many of you caught Obama’s speech Wednesday night? I did, and it was amazing.

health

I made this status update on my Facebook page that night

“I love our president...and please don't complain about health care reform unless you are listening to what he has to say tonight :).”

It sparred a political debate with my friends so far there are 39 comments…and I am sure there will be more.

My favorite comment was from my friend Justin he said:

“Beth, isn't it funny how the same people who will defend a zygote's right to life, are the same people in favor of the status quo?

No abortions! But once that kid is breathing, you're on your own!-Ridiculous indeed.”

I am 100% for health care reform. Something needs to change. In case you missed the speech here is some of the key points.

- First, if you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, or Medicare, or Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have. Let me repeat this: Nothing in our plan requires you to change what you have.

- What this plan will do is make the insurance you have work better for you. Under this plan, it will be against the law for insurance companies to deny you coverage because of a preexisting condition.

- They will no longer be able to place some arbitrary cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or in a lifetime.  We will place a limit on how much you can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses, because in the United States of America, no one should go broke because they get sick.

- And insurance companies will be required to cover, with no extra charge, routine checkups and preventive care, like mammograms and colonoscopies, because there's no reason we shouldn't be catching diseases like breast cancer and colon cancer before they get worse. That makes sense, it saves money, and it saves lives.

- Now, if you're one of the tens of millions of Americans who don't currently have health insurance, the second part of this plan will finally offer you quality, affordable choices.

- Individuals will be required to carry basic health insurance -- just as most states require you to carry auto insurance.

Lies Debunked

-The best example is the claim made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but by prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens. Now, such a charge would be laughable if it weren't so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple.

- There are also those who claim that our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms  I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.

- And one more misunderstanding I want to clear up -- under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions, and federal conscience laws will remain in place.

- Now, I have no interest in putting insurance companies out of business. They provide a legitimate service, and employ a lot of our friends and neighbors. I just want to hold them accountable.

- First, I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits -- either now or in the future.  Now, part of the reason I faced a trillion-dollar deficit when I walked in the door of the White House is because too many initiatives over the last decade were not paid for -- from the Iraq war to tax breaks for the wealthy. I will not make that same mistake with health care.

I could go on, there was so much great information put out there by our president.

My family needs health care reform. Ezra will not be able to find insurance as an adult, or if he can it will cost him a small fortune. It is known that one of the side effects of chemotherapy is secondary cancers, no insurance company is going to be jumping up to insure him.

Why would you not want this for yourself, your family, and our future?

What if your child gets Cancer?

ezraswing

The argument was brought up on my FB page (by my Republican brother, love you!)  that, people that make unhealthy lifestyle choices (the obese, alcoholics, addicts, etc.) should have to pay more for a health care premium than those that make healthy choices. Which I can see the point in that, its kind of like saying, go ahead eat 3 Big Macs a day, smoke a pack a day,  we’ve  got you covered if something should come up.

However, the reason our country spends so much money on health care is because we are the most obese country out there. Obesity leads to all sorts of health related problems. Please read this article to learn more. We need to look at why our country has the highest obesity rate, and fix it!!

What it really comes down to is there needs to be regulations put on our food, what can be produced, what can be advertised, etc. We need to start there to bring down the cost of the United States health care system. Maybe then people wouldn’t be so upset by the idea of health care reform, because maybe then the United States wouldn’t be spending double the amount per person as the Europeans do.

That is my two cents on it all, I hope I didn’t offend too many.

I read many blogs whose authors are republicans, or have different religious views than I. Many of them write about their political views, and just because I don’t agree with them, I don’t stop reading, or commenting on their blogs. I learn from them. You can’t make a valid argument with out hearing both sides.

I appreciate that we all have different views and opinions, that is what makes life interesting. That is how change comes about.

So if you have been tip-toeing around on your blog as well, I encourage you to stomp your feet. Be proud of who you are, even if everyone else may not agree, you will feel better, I promise.

  4. Wow, looks like a lot of people out there aren't interested in yaying or naying your post, huh? LOL! I say YAAAAAY! I agree with you! And I DO support health care reform. Wow. I just put myself on a limb there, and it feels great! :-) Thank you, Beth, for your candor. It takes guts to stick your neck out like that! I applaud you!

  7. Good for you, girl! I couldn't bear to read/listen to anymore of the dramatized "controversy" about Obama's speech. It was disheartening, and downright embarassing. The only thing I would remove from your post is your line: "I hope I didn't offend too many." Don't apologize, never apologize, for stating YOUR informed views on YOUR blog. And then you will truly turn away from being a people pleaser.

  8. I have two words for the conservatives who didn't want their children to hear Obama speak, and who are admamantly against health care reform:

    SOUR GRAPES.

  9. Great post! Unfortunately many people do not realize the value health care reform holds until they have a sick child or are chronically ill themselves.

  10. Good for you! I'm glad you got it out...and I definitely see your point on some things...but I would like to say something (with respect) about the obesity thing. There are (a select few in the broad scheme of things) people who aren't obese by choice. They are obese due to thyroid problems (or other things)...and that isn't their fault. If we are to reform healthcare so that obese people pay more I would like to see a clause stating exemptions for people with health problems that CAUSE obesity. (Not from obesity--ones that cause obesity). The only thing is--some diseases are hard to classify. My dad has diabetes. He was obese at one point but isn't any longer. Diabetes runs in his family. Was it in his genes to be diabetic or was it the weight that he dropped? I'd like to talk more about this, even if it's only here in the comments!

  12. Very awesome! I think more people need to read this so they can really understand what is happening and what needs to happen....we are part of the millions of people out there who don't have health insurance right now because we just can't afford it.

  13. Wow!! I loved your post! I live in Canada (and don't get me started on our politics!;)) and I think every word that you have written was amazing!! I agree with you 100% on the health care issue and the Obama issue as well. I remember how Bush was koodoo'd in every way when he spent time with school classes, why is Obama being shot down? Are parents really that closed-minded that they don't want to at least give their children the oppurtunity to form their own opinions on someone? Hearing the president speak as a child is a once in a lifetime thing - the parents should be fighting to be teacher's helper that day so they can hear him too, not sheltering their child from life.

  16. I have missed being on here Beth! This summer has been very busy, but I'm so glad to be blogging again and to read yours as well. I very much enjoyed your post and agree with you wholeheartedly. I am sorry to hear about Ezra. Oh my goodness. I can't even imagine what you are going through. My prayers are with you.

  18. Really good post, Beth. I'm writing this the day my health insurance company told me it wouldn't cover the MRI I need for my knee. And two weeks after I also had to turn down services at the dentist due to crappy coverage. Seems to me the only people who like the current system are those who can afford really good insurance. Which isn't most of us.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Bravo, Beth! I don't have insurance at the moment, mostly because I can't afford it. However, I'm sure if I applied, the minute they saw cancer on my health records, the majority would deny my application or at least coverage for any future cancer treatments even though I have been cancer free for 32 years.

I had insurance at my last job, but that was thanks to open enrollment. They couldn't turn me down. However, I was told that my extra coverage--I opted for the extra Aflac cancer insurance coverage at the time--wouldn't cover treatment for skin cancer. So if I ended up with breast cancer, they'd help cover chemo. However, if it was melanoma again, I was just SOL.

I would love it if the president's plan goes through and people like me and Ezra won't be turned down just because of something that happened to us as kids that was beyond our control.

  20. While I love you I could strangle you. LOL! I think people are so close eyed with our president it makes me sick to my stomach. I won't even get into it here because I will just end up upset and I don't want that. But i will say this as most people want to comment on how Bush spoke to our children, yes, he did but he didn't 1. build an entire day's cirriculum around it and 2. have to have it changed because it was originally all about Obama and how to help HIM and why HE was so great. When people got outraged it was over the ORIGINAL content not the one actually given!

Also, I think half the crap on the health care should have taken care of YEARS ago. Seriously why wasn't it? If you notice he's not working alone on this one he has plenty of help. McCain being a HUGE one!

  22. Since you went out on a limb voicing your opinion so will I. I have never posted on anyone's blog but felt compelled to do so today. I am one of those parents who objected to my children listening to the President. It had nothing to do with the speech but the curriculum attached. But no one wants to hear that. It is easier to say poor Obama the mean conservatives are out to get him. The liberals ignore the parents saying just let the president talk. I for one was very uncomfortable with the current administration saying "students think about this, do this and so on" When the President addresses the nation my children watch it, as they should. But there is no one telling them what to think, including us,their parents. And don't even get me started on this health care proposal that won't cost anyone anything. Where do you think the money is coming from? Yes things need to change but not shoved down everyone's throat. What is the hurry? I truly believe that the politicians haven't even scratched the surface on real solutions to this dilemma.

    ReplyDelete
  23. A-MEN.

I consider myself educated above-average in the politics behind health care reform. My husband has a masters in Health Administration. We both agree with most of Obama's plan.

One thing people are forgetting: We should be able to disagree without being disrespectful. There IS such thing as a healthy debate. There should be a new rule in Washington: Don't complain without offering a solution. Oh, and it goes without saying that LIES are NOT OK.

I'm not put off about people having opposing views. It's the complete lack of respect for the President of the United States that bothers me the most. It's sending a message to our kids that they only need to respect authority when they agree with them. Apply that to your own homes and see if that makes sense.

I don't agree with my curfew mom, so I'm not going to listen to you.

  26. Beth,

  27. Thank you for writing this! It is so important for women to speak their minds, we have brains, too! I will NEVER understand how someone would object to another person wanting to stress the importance of education. I don't care if you agree with them politically or not. Let Palin tell my kids education is important, what do I care? The more they hear it, the more they'll believe it. And on health care reform - the GOP just wants to defeat Obama, not health care reform, and they'll stop at nothing to make sure it'll happen. They are spreading lies and untruths, and were called out on it. When the president tells you what is in the reform, that's what in the reform! You don't sit there with your arms crossed, rolling your eyes and shaking your head at him. People act as if Obama is some sort of heathen out to get us. I find it pathetic and naive and appalling the way the GOP and conservatives treat our president. He was voted in by the majority. He won, fair and square. Deal with it. Support him. Trust in that he wants what is best for us, our children, and our country. I could go on and on... my point was to say thank you for posting this. I obviously agree with you 100% percent, and will continue to support Obama in every way I can.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Amen! Amen! Amen!!! Thank you for posting this. I haven't been brave enough to broach the topic on my own blog yet. I appreciate all that you said here!

  29. I didn't vote for Obama, not because he is black, but I have different beliefs than he does on abortion and gay marriage. But now that he is president, I do have respect for him. Our school didn't show the speech, but if they had, I wouldn't have kept my child home like so many were planning on doing. I did hear bits and pieces of his speech, and I saw nothing wrong with it.

As far as healthcare, we definitely need reform, but I must admit I don't really understand a lot of it because everybody is yelling different things and it is hard to understand, although your post did clear up a view things.

I have had a couple of controversial topics on my blog, but I blog anyway.

  30. This post makes me realize that there are MANY difference between Canadians like myself and our friendly American neighbors.

I can't say I understand the mentality that one person's lifestyle choices (ie. smoker, drug user, or chosen obesity) must not be allowed to adversely affect others. Especially if that adverse affect is more money.

One of the things I love most about being Canadian is the way we view ourselves AS A WHOLE. If one amongst us needs help whether by their own choices or by God's choices or just plain bad luck, we would NEVER begrudge them that. Even at our own expense. Literally.

I'd like to see more Americans think about the "WE" and not just the "ME" of Healthcare reform.

As for Obama, I don't have to agree with everything he does or believes to afford him the same kindness and respect I would anyone else. President or not.

That's just my lowly Canadian Baby opinion.

I actually have a hard time w/friends up at the lake house - I'm the only Democrat and they give me hell for it! We absolutely cannot talk politics as they are as hateful as that darn Joe Wilson - honestly - and they got some darn bumper stickers - wait til you see THESE - that say:

  32. I agree with you on the president speaking to the children. I read his first book and I know how he was as an actual child (it was written pre-national political aspirations). I was livid about the big deal everyone was making about it. Almost as bad as having 5 minutes of news coverage per newscast on Michelle wearing shorts on vacation. Come On!

  33. Beth...took a lot of courage to step up and finally say what is truely on your mind. But since it is your blog, you have the right to say anything you want.

I watched the speech on Wednesday too and I do agree with alot that you have said and what he has said. I think people need to step back and listen to what he is trying to say and look at it as a big picture and not tunnel vision.

I thought he hit it right on the target the other night and I pray and hope that people will have a open heart to listen and let the system work.

I'm glad that pre-existing is gong to be a law now. because that alone is what is hurting a lot of people. Not just people/children with cancer, but any type of disease.

Hang in there Beth! I think Salvation is knocking on our doors.

I really could have cared less if my child listen to the Obama speech (this is coming from a strong republican who disagrees with Obama on alot)and my daughter did get to watch it at her school. This is my personal opinion but the parents who would take there kids out for this are the same ones that over protect there kids and baby them through life creating much larger problems in the future if you ask me.

  38. Ha! Well done, you! For an introduction to your blog, I've got to say I love your fiery attitude and your willingness to stand your ground. I don't agree with all of your views, but I definitely respect them and you for voicing them. Use this blog as a platform in whatever way you see fit!
And I do agree, the classroom speech was blown so out of proportion. Friends in other countries were weighing in on it and I couldn't help but think how stupid our country appeared to everyone else.
I hope the best for Ezra :)

  41. I admire your courage in speaking out. I too try to speak out occasionally on my blog and have gotten backlash for it.

I do have to say that I am one of those that would not have allowed my child to watch the FIRST proposal of the Obama address to the students (however, I do homeschool, so it was a non-issue.) The reason being because the first speech was all about Obama and trying to sway students minds to support him and get their families to support him just because he is the president. The second (and actual) proposal, I had no problem with. I think it is awesome when children can hear from those in power about how important education is.

As for health care reform, there is certainly something that this country needs to do. But I think charging higher for certain "choice" diseases, etc is a slippery slope. As a previous person said, there is some gray area, such as diabetes/obesity. And what about children that are obese, but are not making their own choices. Are you going to charge higher for their health care because they are obese even though their parents are the ones to blame? It is not as cut and dry as some deem it to be.

    Stopping by from SITS.

  45. I am one of those people, but I don't appreciate the guy who wrote what all Pro lifers are. I don't appreciate how he called a living human being a Zygote. Babies do have a way of breathing in the womb. As far as Obama I don't agree with a lot of things that he does but I think as our president we should respect him and try to support him even if it is simply praying for him and coming up with the positive things about him. I think he is a nice man who is doing the best of his ability, and not a perfect human being just like every single one of us. People seem to want to glorify him like he is some kind of savior. Saviors are not of the human frality. That is all I want to say. As far as him addressing the schools I personally was not sure of what the fuss was about just like I am not sure what the fuss is about the Swine or H1H flu whatever you want to call it is. Keep your eyes on media because they are controlling us bit by bit.

  46. I've been enjoying your blog for awhile -love your poem on the SITS post. You make a lot of good points here, but some things seem contradictory. As you've said, perhaps the smokers, etc. should pay higher premiums. But where does personal responsibility come in when you're advocating food regulations? Is that really the government's job, to think for us in that area? Good conversation starter you've got going here!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. You are awesome. I have a baby with special medical needs, and it INFURIATES ME when I see stupid status updates about "the government can't run anything right, why would health care be any different"? How about, my daughter is on Medicaid because her umbilical cord burst and if it weren't for Medicaid we'd either be homeless or she'd be MUCH sicker. The insurance THAT WE PAY HUNDREDS FOR EACH MONTH denied needed services AGAIN AND AGAIN. I've never dealt with a worse company than our paid insurance, OR A BETTER ONE THAN THE INSURANCE COMPANY PAID FOR BY MEDICAID. Okay, there's my two cents. You go girl. The next time I see yahoos on Facebook posting ridiculous lies I'm going to say something!

  49. LOVE IT! I agree with you, and have been arguing with a friend (via FB) on the whole issue of health care reform. And I got kinda sick of her bashing Obama constantly and literally spouting back the crap some of these blowhard conservatives have been saying in the media. I have been put in situations that have PROVED to me that health care reform is more than necessary, as have you, and I basically wrote on note on my FB that unless you have been in this kind of situation, don't talk to me -- I don't want to hear it. Parroting back Glenn Beck or some other jerk on tv is not going to convince me otherwise.

    So AMEN, sista!
