I Bet You Didn’t Know…

image

that September was Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

or that the ribbon is gold.

I bet you didn’t know:

that cancer is the number one disease that kills our children.

that a little over 1,500 kids will die this year from cancer.

that close to 11,000 kids a year are diagnosed with cancer.

and that the number is rising.

I bet you didn’t know:

that the cure rate is also rising, but there is no complete cure.

that the type of leukemia my son has, has a 85-90% cure rate

that I tear up every time I read that statistic, because 90% isn’t good enough for my son.

I bet you didn’t know:

that childhood cancer research is greatly underfunded.

as is the awareness.

I bet you didn’t know about childhood cancer month because your grocery shelves weren’t lined with gold cereal boxes and bags of chips.

And the white house wasn’t lit up gold in September. You likely didn’t change your Facebook picture gold in honor of the month either.

I am not upset over all the attention breast cancer gets, quite the opposite is true. I think it is amazing and wonderful, because when it comes down to it, cancer is cancer.

I just wish our children received the same.

Because I ask you would 85-90% cure rate be good enough for your child?

Be informed. Be aware.
