Delurker Day

SuperStock_1538R-54648

I know there have to be at least a handful of you out there that read this blog, and never comment. A woman last week, delurked to congratulate me on my pregnancy, and it got me wondering about all the other lurkers I have yet to meet…. I want to know who you are! I really love checking out new blogs and knowing about the people who read this little blog.   So I am asking you to step away from the lurker status today, drop me a comment, and make sure to leave the link to your blog, so I can come visit you! Even if you have commented before, but I have never visited you blog, leave me a comment so I can come check out your diggs!

I don’t bite, I promise….well I don’t break skin.

What Do These Things Have In Common?

food copy

Did you guess pregnancy cravings? Your right. And no, I don’t eat them all together, although the Tabasco on the Ramen is a must!

Now, I don’t normally eat Ramen, in fact I don’t even keep it in the house, but something about it speaks to me right now, especially with the hot sauce.

The eggs were in the very beginning of the pregnancy, I haven’t been eating those lately. The cheese and milk speak for themselves, I love all things dairy right now.

And the Clementine tangerines are sooo tasty, I eat at least three a day, they are like candy!

Oddly I am not really craving sweets, don’t get me wrong, I don’t discriminate if they are in front of me. But with both of the boys I craved sweets like crazy, in fact I wasn’t even a sweets eater until I got pregnant.

With Ro I ate mass amounts of Entenmann’s chocolate covered donuts and carrot cake. I still can’t eat carrot cake. Did I mention I gained 80lbs?

With Ezra it was all about the Reese’s Big Cups, and Tabasco.

I still think I am having another boy. I really don’t feel much different with this pregnancy, I have had a few waves of nausea, which I have never had in the past. And my girls (.)(.) hurt worse than I remember with the other pregnancies, but other than that everything is very similar.

So how about you moms? What did you crave? Were your pregnancies any different when you were carrying a boy or girl?

Ok, I have to go make some Ramen now with Tabasco…..

Bloggography Challenge, Week 2

Manic Mother

This week we asked you to step out of auto mode and learn how to use your ISO. The weeks them was children’s play things. Find the tutorial here.

But before I get to that, both Lolli and I will be showcasing our favorite pictures from last weeks theme. We will be doing this for every assignment! Last weeks assignment involved the theme winter. My favorite picture was Lissa’s from Whooo’s That Girl? Her picture did a great job capturing the snow and the mood that winter evokes. Well done!

About My Picture:

Shot in Program mode (P)

Aperture: f/4.5, Shutter: 1/80, Focal Length:50mm, ISO: 125

I adjusted the levels in Photoshop (cntrl+L) and I added some fog to the base of the picture to make my toy horse pop.

Now lets see what you all came up with! Leave the link to your post in the MckLinky.

Lolli and I will each be choosing a favorite picture from each assignment we post, and featuring our favorites 2 weeks from now when we post the next assignments MckLinky.

Don’t forget to grab a button or link back to Lolli and I on your post . And make sure you add your picture to the Flickr group as well.

The MckLinky will be up for one week, so you have plenty of time to take a picture still!

Don’t forget to go check out my co-hosts picture!

Three Peas In Our Pod!

Surprise! My husband and I are expecting our third child at the end of August!

2months

I went yesterday for an ultrasound and got to see the little bean’s heart beating away. We are beyond excited!

I didn’t think we would have any more children after Ezra was diagnosed…because, what if the unthinkable happens twice? Well, we decided cancer had already decided enough in our lives for us. This is what we wanted before Ezra got sick, we decided we didn’t want to change our minds. Besides, we had already bought the minivan!

And yes, I know I look about four months pregnant already. I don’t know what to tell you,  I got nothing. I just picture my little uterus giving a big sigh and expanding in one big breath upon conception. I have been showing since about 5 weeks. I get ginormous when I am pregnant, I constantly am getting asked if I am carrying twins, or if I am ready to pop any day, and I will only be 6 months along.

Fingers and toes crossed that everything goes smoothly…..

What Keeps Me Up

alarmm copy

When you have a child that is diagnosed with cancer, you are immediately struck by the pure randomness of life. There is no system in place, and there is no reason.  Life is accidental at best.

Some of you may say, but it is Gods plan. And maybe your right. I will admit I am not a religious person, by any means. But, I like to think that God is a being that can help and heal those that are suffering. I don’t think God is orchestrating disaster, I don’t think God decides one day to give a child cancer, or unleash an earthquake on the impoverished.

I think that is life; raw and unbridled. The unexpected happens every second of every day, to each and every one of us. There are no exceptions, no people freed from life’s happenstance.

It is a breath taking, ear ringing, time stopping realization. To digest the truth that you and your family are not safe from all harm. And, that all too often you are completely helpless from preventing said harm.

This keeps me up at night….

Car crashes, natural disasters, food poisoning, freak accidents,  premature death, cancer, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time to name a few.

While I don’t consider myself a worrier, these fragments of thoughts have a way of weaving their way into my mind. Catching me off guard, stealing my breath, and muddling my mind.

Don’t get me wrong, life also is full of beautiful accidents. Babies, meeting the man of your dreams, opportunities, and second chances.

I am oddly grateful for being versed in this life lesson. I stand a little taller, and feel a little less naive. Because believe me, I never in a million years thought this would happen to my family. I ran with the notion that ignorance was bliss.

Even though I may worry more now, and exude more caution in my daily life. I feel more prepared for whatever lies ahead of us.

The unforeseen seems a little more manageable if I admit to its existence.

What keeps you up at night?

Learning ISO with Bloggography

Manic Mother

  What is ISO?

One of the greatest tools a DSLR camera (and some point and shoots) have is the ability to adjust the ISO. Before DSLRs you bought your film in different speeds, ISO refers the the speed of the film. They still use that term, it is just now done digitally. Which is fantastic for us, it means we can take pictures in different lighting without having to switch our film!

I read in the amazing book Understanding Exposure, that a good way to look at ISO is in terms of worker bees. Here is his description: “If my camera is set to ISO 100, I have, in effect, 100 worker bees; and if your camera is set to ISO 200, you have 200 worker bees. The job of these worker bees is to gather the light that comes through the lens and make an image.”

So the higher your ISO is the faster your camera will take the picture, because you will have more worker bees gathering light for you. But that doesn’t mean you want to use a high ISO all the time, the opposite is actually true.

Which ISO to use?

As a rule, you want to use the lowest ISO possible. Why? Well the higher the ISO the more noise/grain you will see in your pictures.

I took this picture here in 2 different ISO’s

DSC_0063

I am going to zoom in on it to show you the difference.

First picture was taken at ISO 100

ISO 100

The second was taken at ISO 1600, can you see the difference? See all of the noise/grain in the second picture? That is why you want to shoot at the lowest ISO possible.

ISO 1600

When outdoors, I usually shoot in between ISO 100-200, closer to the 200 range if I am shooting something fast moving (like a child!)

With the ability to control  ISO, we can eliminate the use of flash most of the time. The flash that comes with your DSLR camera (on board flash) is most often harsh, and unflattering. It tends to blow out pictures and cast harsh shadows. I never use mine, I have an external flash I use if I need one, but I would say I still only use that 2% of the time.

If you are inside and you try to take a picture with out the flash and it turns out blurry, bump up the ISO until the blur disappears. Remember, the higher the ISO, the more worker bees you have helping you gather light.

When I am inside I usually shoot anywhere from ISO 400 all the way up to ISO 1600.

Where is my ISO?

I will show you how to find the ISO on my Nikon, check out Lolli’s post to see it done on a Canon.

ISO

See the button marked ISO? Hold it down and turn the back dial to adjust it. You can see the adjustments being made in the top LCD monitor. You can also go into your menu to adjust it, this is the fastest way though.

iso1

The Challenge:

For this challenge turn your cameras mode dial to program mode (P). The camera will pick the shutter speed and aperture for you, you will just be adjusting the ISO. Try taking pictures in different ISOs. Remember no flash!

Challenge Inspiration:

You can take a picture of whatever you like, but if you need inspiration, start here.

Need inspiration? Since I took a picture of a toy, it got me thinking why don’t we do children's playthings! So break out your camera and take pics of toys or your little ones playing with toys, just as long as it has something children play with in the picture.

Still have questions? Feel free to ask them in the comments.

Magic Fairy Door

After Ezra was diagnosed, I made it a personal goal to make a special play area for the boys. I knew we would be spending so much more time at home, and I felt it was important the boys had somewhere to play. So I converted our sunroom into a playroom, it gets far more use now! I added a lot of little touches to make it a magical fun place for them. One of those things was our magic fairy door.

fd1 copy

Its a little dollhouse door, and I tell the boys that is how the fairies get into our house. The fairies leave notes and treats. Once while Ro and I were on vacation the fairies even put all of his Transformer toys back together. The fairies have also been known to steal toys now and then.

I loved making this, it only fueled my desire to have a dollhouse of my own even further. I have decided that even if I don’t have a daughter, I will someday make and own my own dollhouse. Because I am crazy, and little things are so cute!

To make your own you will need:

  • wooden dollhouse door (hinged or unhinged)
  • dollhouse doorknob
  • paint
  • hot glue

- first paint your door and dry, I also added a clear coat to mine because it was kind of dull.

- hot glue the door knob on

- hot glue it to the wall and enjoy!

I ordered all of the materials I used through an online dollhouse miniature store. I thought the mailbox was an added touch, it even opens up so we can put letters in it!

Bloggography Challenge, Week One

Welcome to the week one challenge of Bloggography! This week we asked for you to capture a winter themed picture. You can find the first tutorial here.

Manic Mother

Being that I live in FL, there is not a whole lot of winter scenery in these parts…even though it did snow in FL over the weekend, just not where I live. There really is no winter in FL, it is just a long fall. So I had a look around my yard, and found this Sweetgum seed pod clinging to a bare tree. There was beautiful light coming through the fall colored leaves of another tree.

Nellie’s Catwalk For Kids

I will admit that I often feel I am channeling my inner geek by writing this blog. I wonder to myself a lot, why do I spend all this time writing and working on this blog….for free? Why? Because I love doing it, I love the people, and I love the creative outlet it has provided me.

And then there are the times when completely random people read my writing and those people reach out to me, offering truly random acts of kindness.

Such an act happened a few months ago. Jenelle somehow stumbled upon something I had written about Ezra. She then contacted me asking if there was any way she could help. She offered for her organization, Nellie’s Catwalk For Kids (NC4K) to help make Christmas spectacular for the boys. I couldn’t say no.

tree

Spectacular indeed! Those were all presents for the boys, all donated to us by Nellie’s Catwalk, I think we in total only bought 3 gifts for the boys this year. They also donated gift cards, and money for bills for us. It was such a blessing!

The boys had such an amazing Christmas, thanks to Nellie’s Catwalk.

trains

Are you asking yourself what is Nellie’s Catwalk For Kids? Well I interviewed Jenelle herself! Please read on, it is such an amazing organization.

            (Jenelle)

What is Nellie's Catwalk For Kids?

Nellie's Catwalk for Kids is a growing non-profit organization that Jenelle "Nellie" Krumlauf started when she was only sixteen-years-old. This organization raises funds through two events that are fashion shows, the prom expo which is held in the winter, and the summer fashion show.

Catwalk-312

What made you start Nellie's Catwalk?

I wanted to start Nellie's Catwalk for several different reasons. My grandmother, Goldie Sheridan passed away from cancer when I was very young and I and was very hard for me to understand why. My grandmother use to always call me Nellie and now my entire family calls me nellie, so in honor of my grandmother we added "Nellie" to the name of the organization! When I was a sophomore in high school I felt like I needed to make use of my free time and I am not very athletic, so I was searching for what I could do to help. Overtime it molded into helping children, then into helping children with cancer, and then helping children with cancer through fashion shows. After the first show back in 2007 I was hooked and knew this was something I wanted to do until there is a cure!

hair

What are you goals for Nellie's Catwalk?

I am now going to school majoring in Public Relations and minoring in non-profit management, I hope the skills that I learn in the classroom at Ohio Dominican University will help me advance NC4K! I am currently volunteering at Nationwide Children's Hospital in the oncology clinic to get to know the kids on a personal level, my goal is to get to know the kids and form a Nellie's Catwalk for Kids CLUB. My goal with the club is to organize monthly events for the kids to take part in to help take their mind off of everything else. Another goal that I have for NC4K is to spread it to other major cities across the United States to be able to help children within those communities. And finally the biggest overall goal is to find a cure, because it breaks my heart to see anyone, especially children, suffer from cancer, and by creating this organization and the help of other organizations it will help put a stop to cancer.

165

177

What are you currently working on?

Besides working 3 jobs and going to school full-time I somehow manage to make time for NC4K and help it to grow even more. We just finished buying Christmas presents for 6 different families that have a child with cancer. This is something that I wanted to do since summer because NC4K donates to Nationwide Children's Hospital Oncology Center to help advance research, but we also set aside funds to directly help families that have a child with cancer. When delivering the gifts it truly touched my heart to see how excited the children were, it helped me personally remember the true meaning of Christmas. We have also just added the 2010 PROM EXPO which will be held Jan. 31st, 2010 at the Hilton Hotel at Easton Town Center from 1:30-5:00PM. This event was designed to showcase the new prom trends for 2010, it will help girls select their perfect dress for their prom night. Tickets are only $10.00 each!

15443_1126463768297_1428240059_30634655_6104443_n

How can people help locally?

There are several ways that people can help locally. To name a few they can donate funds to help NC4K grow, attend our events, be a model in the fashion shows, donate silent auction items, be a volunteer, pray for NC4K, and many more!

How can people help from afar?

There are also several ways people can help even if they don't live in Ohio. If they feel called to help start a Nellie's Catwalk in their city they can work with Nellie on getting that started, they can donate funds to NC4K, pray for our organization, and many more.

Blog for a Cause:

You could also help raise awareness by reposting my post, or blogging about the upcoming prom expo especially if you live in Ohio!

Also, why not support Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids by grabbing a button, and placing it on your blog? Please, it would mean a lot to me. You can also find it in my sidebar.

Manic Mother

Thanks again Jenelle, we were so touched by what your organization did for our family.

The Mode Dial: Get To Know Your Camera With Bloggography

Written by Lolli

 Manic Mother

For quite a while after getting my digital Canon Rebel, I happily kept it on auto mode all the time. I honestly had no idea what all of those other modes were for. But when I decided to become more serious about photography, I knew that I needed to learn at least a little more about what my camera was capable of.

Most cameras, digital and film alike, have a mode dial that looks something like this:

 mode-dial

(this is what my Nikon D80 dial looks like)

My Canon 40D dial has a few extra functions, and other camera makes will look slightly different. Luckily, the icons used for the automatic scene modes are pretty standard across the camera makers, as well as between SLRs and point and shoot cameras. Most point and shoots will only have the auto mode functions, but more and more now are offering users additional creative control with some manual functions. Don't worry if you don't understand all of the terminology, like aperture and depth of field. We'll get to that later!

AUTO MODES

The point of all of these automatic scene modes is to provide the camera user with a quick shortcut to commonly used exposures. You tell the camera what kind of picture you're taking, and the camera will set the exposure for you.

Full Auto (green mode): this is the true "point and shoot" mode. The camera decides everything. The flash will go off most often in this mode, even when it's unnecessary. Use this mode when you don't want to have to adjust anything.

Portrait mode (lady's head): Portrait mode uses a wide aperture to flatter the subject by making the background out of focus. The camera may recognize and focus on a face. If you are attempting to photograph a group of people this may not be a wise mode to use, due to the limited depth of field.

Sports mode (running man): This mode will instruct the camera to use the fastest shutter speed possible with the existing light available. Sports mode turns off the flash to allow for the speediest camera operation and may also activate the continuous shooting mode, so the camera will fire as long as the button is held down as opposed to the normal single frame operation.

Night mode (a person with a star): This mode raises the ISO and uses a very wide aperture in order to take a photograph using the limited natural light, rather than a flash. This mode usually uses a very long shutter speed and you'll definitely want to use a tripod  in order to ensure a crisp picture.

Macro (flower): Macro mode enables you to take very close and frame-filling photos of your subject such as a flower, or anything that you want to photograph close up.

Landscape (mountains): This mode is used to capture expansive sceneries, keeping both the foreground and the distant images in sharp focus. It uses a small aperture to gain depth of field.

PROGRAM MODES

Program mode (P): Program mode is very similar to auto mode. It offers partial control over shutter speed and aperture. The camera will select what it thinks is the correct exposure, but the user may over-ride. In this mode, input from the plus/minus bias control is allowed to provide minor exposure adjustments and the user controls whether the flash is used.

Aperture Priority mode (Av or A): Aperture priority mode controls the aperture (f/stop), and the shutter speed is calculated by the camera. Pay attention to shutter speed in this mode, as the necessary shutter speed may not be attainable with the f/stop you select.

Shutter Priority mode (Tv or S): Shutter priority controls the shutter speed, and aperture is calculated by the camera. In this mode you select the shutter speed necessary to halt the motion being photographed. Just like in aperture priority, be aware that the camera may be forced into chosing an aperture that will not render the entire situation sharply.

Manual Mode (M): In this mode, you set both shutter speed and aperture independently. Use this mode if you know what you're doing, or if you want to over-ride the camera's settings.

Are you ready to go out and try something new now? We have a Bloggography challenge for you this week!

The challenge:

Chose any one of the modes on your camera other than full auto and take a Winter-themed picture. Then come back next week and share it with us (we'll have a linky to link your post on Tuesday!). Include any information you have about the mode and settings that you used when taking your picture, so that we can all learn!

If you haven't already joined the Bloggograhy Flickr group, now would be a great time to do it! You can add your challenge photos to the group pool and get ideas from others trying to improve their photography
